Cabinet: Lawyer Faults Party On Deadline To Wike
Governor Nyesom Wike will not be acting in breach of the constitution of Federal Republic of Nigeria unless he does not appoint commissioners until his four-year tenure elapses.
A Port Harcourt-based legal practitioner, Barr Precious Dike made the assertion in a chat with The Tide in the Rivers State capital, last Wednesday.
Citing section 147 of the 1999 constitution, as amended, which deals with the appointment of ministers of the federation and commissioners at the state level, Barr Dike noted that no time limit is prescribed by the status book.
“If the governor fails to appoint commissioners after four years, then he has contravened the constitution,” he said, adding that however, the constitution of functional cabinet within a reasonable period of time would help the governor respond to the aspirations of the people of the state who freely gave him their mandate.
Describing Governor Wike as a listening leader, Barr Dike said the state chief executive would heed to wise counsels and do the needful at the appropriate time, and urged Rivers people to continue to support him to dispense good governance.
Recall that the Labour Party in Rivers State last Monday threatened to institute legal action against Governor Wike if he fails to name his full cabinet within seven days.
