Don Tasks Journalists on Reportage Of Gender-Based Violence
A lecturer and former Dean, Faculty of Law, University of Calabar, Mrs. Ohiama Ugbe has charged media practitioners in the country to be proactive in the reportage of all gender-based violence which inflict pain on women instead of allowing such crimes to be swept under the carpet without being reported.
Speaking at the end of a training workshop organised by the Coalition of Eastern Non-Governmental Organisations (CENGOS) for journalists in Calabar, Ugbe, who doubles as coordinator for the Cross River State chapter of the NGO, stated that if issues related to women battering and harassment were reported each time there occur, it would be easy for the NGO to exert pressure on the National Assembly to legislate on policies that would make perpetrators of the offence pay dearly for such assault for a better society.
She said that as media practitioners, journalists have the potential to influence the social and cultural norms that drive violence against women, adding that they have a task to use their platforms to expose all crimes and violence that tend to lower the reputation of women in the estimation of right thinking individuals.
