Boat Operators Task RSG On Grants

The Association of Boat Operators at Okrika Jetty in Marine Base has called on the Rivers State Government to assist its members with grants to purchase boats and engines.
Speaking to The Tide on the plights of boat operators in Port Harcourt, Mr. Strong Adolphus said the bad economic situation could not allow drivers to buy boats for their business.
Adolphus also appealed to the ministry of transport and other relevant agencies to assist the operators with soft loans to do business.
While condemning the incessant boat mishaps in Port Harcourt water fronts, the operator called on marine police to check the reckless driving by some boat operators in the state to reduce accident.
Adolphus also appealed to the ministry of transport, Nigerian Maritime Administrator and Safety Agency (NIMASA) and private companies to organise workshops on safety for marine transporters in the state.
He called on companies, chairmen of local government areas in the state, Non Governmental Organisations (NGO) to provide marine equipment and life vests for passengers.
The mariner called on Marine Police and the Navy to arrest any boat operator plying the waterways without life vest on its passengers, even as he recommended sanction for such driver.
Adolphus also decried the dumping of industrial waste in the river by companies and residents of Port Harcourt City and called for the arrest of any culprit of such act.
