Stakeholder Wants Abonnema Wharf Reclaimed
A renowned stakeholder in the maritime industry in Rivers State, Mr. Philip Pepple has urged the state government to reclaim the dilapidated Abonnema Wharf waterfront to make it more competitive.
The stakeholder also decried the deplorable condition of waterfronts and jetties in the state.
Pepple disclosed this to The Tide last Wednesday in Port Harcourt while making case for its sand filling to revamp commercial activities at the jetty.
He decried the poor sanitary condition of the Abonnema Wharf waterfront, describing it as unhealthy.
Pepple, who plies boat from Port Harcourt to Bakana, called on the ministry of transport to assist and reclaim the waterfront to promote water transportation and its commercial activities in the jetty.
He decried the dumping of debris in Rivers by residents of Port Harcourt metropolis and called on the Nigerian Maritime, Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) to clean up the waters of plastics and other objects.
The stakeholder explained that government should provide boat operators with life-vests to reduce loss of lives in boat accidents.
While calling on government to legislate law to reduce recklessness among drivers, Pepple advocated for periodic workshops to re-orientate and enlighten boat drivers on safety and other practices.
