NLC President Tasks FG On Minimum Wage
The President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Ayuba Waba, has called on the Federal Government to expedite action on the implementation of the new minimum wage to improve the lot of workers in the country.
Waba made the call in Port Harcourt, last weekend during the 4th quadrennial delegates conference of the National Union of Petroleum and National Gas Workers (NUPENG).
The NLC President called on the National Assembly to speed up the passage of the National Minimum Wage Bill to enhance the living standard of workers, and pointed out that Nigerian workers deserve better treatment.
“I want to use this opportunity to reiterate the need for Nigerian workers to be treated fairly because of the bulk of responsibilities they carry and their contributions towards national development.
“It is imperative that the National Assembly speeds up the passage of the National Minimum Wage Bill presently before it to ensure that workers’ standard of living is improved”.
The NLC Chairman also cautioned against a plot to bring issues of workers concern to the concurrent list, noting that such decision would breed crisis. He vowed to mobilise Nigerian workers to resist any attempt to undermine the prospect of growth of workers by transferring their issues to the concurrent list.
He cautioned against the polarisation of workers unionism by extraneous forces, and assured the commitment of the NLC under his leadership towards the promotion of workers’ welfare.
