East-West Road: Communities Express Anger Over Neglect
Communities in Rivers and Bayelsa States, along the deplorable section of the EastWest Road have staged a protest over Federal Government’s continued delay in the completion of the road project.
The affected communities, under the aegis of East-West Road Communities Association (EWRCA), converged on Mbiama axis of the road as part of the association’s media interactive session to express their anger.
EWRCA Chairman, Eze Joshua Eyiba Eze Igbu Igbuduya II who read the association’s communique, accused Federal Government of not showing concern over the plight of the people of the area, stressing that several lives and millions of Naira worth of property have been lost because of the deplorable condition of the road.
The Monarch particularly recalled that in 2012 and 2014, two accidents occurred at Okogbe and Ahoada respectively, where over 600 persons died following tanker explosion and noted that such huge loss could have been avoided if the Federal Government had fixed the road.
“What’s our offence? The non-challant attitude of the Federal Government is affecting us. The only road that brings out oil and gas is so neglected. This is impunity. We cannot take it again,” he lamented.
Eyiba revealed that youth from the affected communities in both Bayelsa and Rivers states had concluded plans to block the road in protest of Federal Government’s neglect, but noted that the association had pleaded with the youth to hold their anger as another passionate appeal would be made to the Federal Government to fix the road to avert severe consequences.
He said: “We are here to pacify our youth who want to block the road. The Federal Government has to do something; otherwise they will bear the brunt.”
The association condemned a recent remark credited to the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, that he would not invest in Niger Delta region, if he has money, stressing that while the region was left to suffer neglect, the milk flowing from it was being used to develop the northern part of Nigeria.
EWRCA appealed to the Federal Government to expedite action towards completing the road in view of its strategic importance to the socio-economic development of Nigeria.
