Automobile Village: GPHCDA, Russian Firm Sign Pact
The Greater Port Harcourt City Development Authority (GPHCDA), has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with a Russian firm, Intersroil, to build a new automobile spare parts market.
Sole administrator of GPHCDA, Ambassador Desmond Akawor, who disclosed this to aviation correspondents at the Port Harcourt International Airport, Omagwa, last Thursday said they signed the MoU with the Russian company last Wednesday.
He said the authority for the past two years has been negotiating with investors to start a new automobile spare parts market, which would serve as automobile village for spare parts dealers and mechanics.
According to him, the idea for this is to decongest the Port Harcourt City, pointing out that this is the vision of the State Governor, Chief Nyesom Wike, to Mop up all spare parts market and mechanics to a particular place.
Akawor said that the vast land which is located along the Iriebe axis of Port Harcourt-Aba Expressway would serve as a modern automobile village with modern facilities, with shopping malls, banks, police station, fire service, 24-hour power supply and likely a school, among others.
“The project will be private-sector driven, The Interstroil firm will invest 70 per cent while the Rivers State Government through the GPHCDA will contribute 30 per cent.
“The cost of the project is about N30 billion, and in the next two months, the company will mobolise to site to start work, and in 18 months time, I believe we will invite the state governor to commission the place.
“About 8,000 shops will be built and that will attract population, and such will be like the population of certain local governments, and it will be a community for spare parts and auto dealers.
“The cost of the shops will be affordable and what they will see there will not be obtainable in any other place like Ikoku and Elekiahia.
“We will mobilize all the spare parts dealers in Port Harcourt to that site, and they will be interested and willing to go to the automobile village,” Akawor said.
The GPHCDA boss, however, stated that the authority would serve as a regulatory body to supervise the project and operations at the village, so as to maintain the standard required, while the project would be private sector driven.
