NGO Offers Free Medical Services To 700
No fewer than 700 persons in Edo State have benefitted from free eye treatment provided by TY Danjuma Foundation, a non-governmental organisation.
The Coordinator of the programme, Dr Tolu Afolaranmi, disclosed this in Benin in an interview with newsmen.
Afolaranmi said that the free medical services were conducted in collaboration with the Care Vision Support Initiative (CAVSI).
He said that 111 surgeries were performed, including 83 cataract extraction with intraocular lens implantation and 28 minor operations.
He said that 334 adults were refracted and provided with corrective eye glasses during the one-week exercise.
The coordinator also said that some other beneficiaries received medications for common eye problems.
He further disclosed that five children with congenital or developmental cataract were identified, adding that four of them were blind in both eyes.
Afolaranmi said that they had been slated for specialised corrective surgery.
He said that the surgeries would be performed at the University of Jos Teaching Hospital and the expenses would be borne by TY Danjuma Foundation.
The coordinator also said that some primary and secondary school children were also screened during the exercise.
He disclosed that 300, comprising 138 from primary schools and 162 from secondary schools were screened for refractive error.
