Bayelsa Teachers Continue Strike Despite Govt’s Plea
The Nigeria Union of
Teachers (NUT), Bayelsa State, has called on teachers in all public primary and secondary schools in the state to continue with the strike declared by the union.
Teachers in the state have been on strike since the resumption of the new academic session last month.
They embarked on strike to protest against unpaid arrears of salaries and other obligations yet to be fulfilled by the government.
It was learnt that the teachers’ union, held an emergency congress last Monday, where it resolved that the strike should continue.
The NUT, therefore, called on the teachers not to obey the directive given by the Academic Staff Union of Secondary Schools that the teachers should go back to the classrooms.
The Chairman, NUT, Bayelsa State, Mr. Kalama John-Tonpre, alleged that the ASUSS might have been compromised.
John-Tonpre, therefore, called on the teachers to stay at home until the NUT calls off the strike.
He also urged members of the public to disregard allegations by the state’s commissioner for information and orientation that the union had been politicised.
He, however, said the commissioner’s position was his personal opinion, which did not represent the position of the state government.
The state government had assured the teachers of prompt payment of their salaries and allowances, and appealed to them to call off their strike.
The Commissioner for Education, Mr. Markson Fefegha, had given the assurance during a one-day workshop on ‘The preparation of monthly payment vouchers and nominal rolls’, which took place at the DSP Alamieyeseigha Memorial Banquet Hall in Yenagoa.
