Amnesty: Cultists Surrender Arms In Omuma
The modest success
recorded thus far by the Rivers State Government amnesty programme was last weekend accentuated with the surrender of more arms and ammunition by some repentant cultists in Omuma Local Government Area.
Receiving the repentant cultists and their arms in Eberi, the Omuma Local Government headquarters, Chairman, Rivers State Amnesty Committee, Sir Ken Chinda, said the government was delighted that the misguided youth were now realising the pivotal role they could play in making the state achieve enviable heights in fast-tracking infrastructure and overall development, and assured that the committee would soon launch efforts to reintegrate the former cultists and youth engaged in anti-social activities.
Chinda, after the former cultists had renounced their membership of the different cult groups, which they claimed they belonged, emphatically told them never to go back to their old ways but should henceforth be positive examples of good values and principles in the society.
The Caretaker Committee Chairman of Omuma, Hon. Christian Chisom Nwaiwu, while welcoming members of the state amnesty committee, lauded Governor Nyesom Wike, for the opportunity given the former cultists to repent and embrace a new life of honour and integrity.
Nwaiwu urged the beneficiaries of the amnesty offer to take advantage of the opportunity to show true commitment to honest repentance, and shun every form of anti-social behaviours.
The Tide reports that during the ceremony, many youth from different cult groups who are mostly indigenes of neighbouring communities outside Omuma, publicly renounced their membership and any future involvement in such acts of criminality and violence, just as they surrendered various dangerous weapons, including arms to the amnesty committee.
Dignitaries from all walks of life, including traditional rulers graced the event.
It would be recalled that Omuma Local Government Area shares boundaries with some communities in the South East states, particularly Abia, where most of the criminals have emerged from over the years.
