Group Urges FG To Review Power Sector Privatisation
Centre for the Vul
nerable and Underprivileged (Centrep), a civil society organisation, has urged the Federal Government to revisit power sector privatisation process to address continued poor performance of the industry.
Executive Director of the organisation, Mr Oghenejabor Ikimi, made the call in a statement in Warri, Delta.
Ikimi stated that the power sector, being a critical arm of the economy, had not improved since it was privatised by the government, and attributed the situation to insincerity in the exercise.
“The Federal Government should revisit the issues of the ‘dubious’ privatisation of the then Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) that saw to the handing over of a vital public utility to political elite.
“The buyers do not have the technical know-how and the financial muscle to make any difference in power generation, transmission and distribution.
“The result is the darkness our dear nation has been plunged into perpetually.
“Nigerians do not have electricity in their homes, business places and industries, and we may never have electricity as long as some people are in control of the power sector,’’ he said.
Ikimi urged the government to revisit the privatisation exercise with a view to revoking licenses issued to power distribution companies, generating companies and their transmission counterparts in the interest of the country.
