CSOs Want ECOWAS Countries To Address Economic Inequalities
Civil Society
Organisations (CSOs) in the West African sub-region, have called on governments in the region to take steps to address growing social, economic and political inequalities among their people.
They made the call in a statement by Mr David Anyaele of Centre for Citizens with Disabilities (CCD) at the end of a workshop on “Inequalities for Civil Society Organisations’’ in West Africa.
The training workshop was organised by the UN SDGs Action Campaign in partnership with the West African Civil Society Forum and Global Call for Action against Poverty (GCAP).
Anyaele expressed concern that in spite of the gains of the defunct Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) over the past two decades, income, gender and social inequalities persist.
“We acknowledge the primary roles of Governments in ensuring inclusive and equitable development process and outcomes for the benefit of all citizens.
“We urge governments to domesticate, integrate and mainstream the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into national planning processes,’’ Anyaele said.
He also called on national governments to initiate actions aimed at domesticating international and regional human rights instruments that would guarantee civil, political, economic, social and cultural rights
He appealed to them to take adequate steps to protect women, children and persons with disabilities in accordance with international and regional commitments and create environment for inclusive growth.
“We reiterate calls for the development and implementation of pro-poor policies including fair and progressive tax regimes for inclusive growth and sustainable development,’’ he said.
The CSOs specifically urged the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to support member states in national efforts at domesticating, integrating and implementing the SDGs.
They also want the region body to develop mechanisms and tools for monitoring and tracking inequalities in the sub-region such as biennial national reports and inequalities index.
Anyaele pledged the readiness of the CSO to tackle inequalities.
“As civil society, we pledge to deploy our resources, skills and competences to work together to address the root causes, manifestations and impacts of inequalities in our societies through awareness creation, policy and legislative advocacy and monitoring and research.
“Mobilise financial and non-financial resources from different sources including foundations, private sector, governments, international development partners and the UN System to fight inequalities in all its forms,’’ he said.
