Edo NUT Faults New Minimum Wage …Wants Primary Schools Teachers To Benefit
The Nigerian Union of
Teachers (NUT), Edo chapter, has decried the non-inclusion of teachers in public primary schools in the N25,000 new minimum wage for workers in the state.
The Secretary of NUT in the state, Mr Akin Adeojo, who spoke in an interview with newsmen on Saturday in Benin, urged the government to reverse the decision.
Adeojo said that their counterparts in public secondary schools were captured in the N25,000 minimum wage.
He called on the state government to include primary school teachers in the state in the new wage scheme.
“When Gov. Adams Oshiomhole increased the minimum wage from N18,000 to N25,000 on workers’ day this year, he said that every worker in the state would be involved.
“The governor did not exclude any sector from benefitting from the increment when he made the pronouncement on workers’ day.
“But it’s like some teachers have been exempted from benefiting from the increment.
“The new wage has been implemented and the core civil servants have received the new wage in their May salaries, but primary school teachers have not.
“We have written to the governor, met with the state Head of Service and the state arm of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) to inform them of the development.
“We have been telling our teachers to be calm and that we will resolve the matter. We have been telling them that the exclusion may be a mistake,” he added.
He also appealed to the state government to look into the training and re-training of teachers in the state.
