Poverty: UN Wants Members To Focus Attention On Marginalised Families
Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon has reiterated his call on UN member states to focus greater attention on the excluded and marginalised members of the human family.
Ban made the call in New York on Saturday in his message on the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, marked every year on Oct. 17.
This year’s celebration has as its theme is, “Building a Sustainable Future: Coming Together to End Poverty and Discrimination”.
Spurred on by the global mobilisation behind the Millennium Development Goals, the Secretary-General said states had made extraordinary progress in reducing extreme poverty, adding that more than one billion people had been lifted above the poverty threshold over the past 25 years
“Yet these gains have not reached everyone. More than 900 million people continue to live in extreme poverty, and many more are at risk.
“Climate change, violent conflict and other disasters threaten to undo many of our gains,” he said.
In adopting the 2030 Agenda, he said, world leaders made a time-bound commitment to end poverty in all its forms, everywhere.
“Our ability to meet this call requires us to address discrimination in all its forms. leaving no one behind means, ending the discrimination and abuse targeted at one half of humankind, the world’s women and girls.
“It means combating overt discrimination against minorities, migrants and others, as well as the more insidious neglect of the disadvantaged, especially children.
“It means ensuring access to the rule of law and protecting the human rights of all,” he said.
He said the 2030 Agenda emerged from the most inclusive process in United Nations history.
Ban said member states, millions of young people and thousands of non-governmental organisations, business-people and others, were part of the discussions.
“As we look now to translate the 17 Sustainable Development Goals into meaningful action on the ground, we must sustain this spirit.
“Ours can be the first generation to witness a world without extreme poverty, where all people can participate and contribute equally, free of discrimination and want,” he said.

BVN Enrolments Rise 6% To 67.8m In 2025 — NIBSS
The Nigeria Inter-Bank Settlement System (NIBSS) has said that Bank Verification Number (BVN) enrolments rose by 6.8 per cent year-on-year to 67.8 million as at December 2025, up from 63.5 million recorded in the corresponding period of 2024.
In a statement published on its website, NIBSS attributed the growth to stronger policy enforcement by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the expansion of diaspora enrolment initiatives.
NIBSS noted that the expansion reinforces the BVN system’s central role in Nigeria’s financial inclusion drive and digital identity framework.
Another major driver, the statement said, was the rollout of the Non-Resident Bank Verification Number (NRBVN) initiative, which allows Nigerians in the diaspora to obtain a BVN remotely without physical presence in the country.
A five-year analysis by NIBSS showed consistent growth in BVN enrolments, rising from 51.9 million in 2021 to 56.0 million in 2022, 60.1 million in 2023, 63.5 million in 2024 and 67.8 million by December 2025. The steady increase reflects stronger compliance with biometric identity requirements and improved coverage of the national banking identity system.
However, NIBSS noted that BVN enrolments still lag the total number of active bank accounts, which exceeded 320 million as of March 2025.
The gap, it explained, is largely due to multiple bank accounts linked to single BVNs, as well as customers yet to complete enrolment, despite the progress recorded.
