Guber Aspirant Stresses Need To Retrain Boat Drivers
The need for training and retraining of speed boat drivers in Okrika Local Government Area of Rivers State has been stressed.
A former gubernatorial candidate and President of Okrika Cultural Foundation (OCF), Mr. Atamuno Ajubo Atamuno, made the call while presenting 500 pieces of life vests he promised the association at their newly commissioned Speed Boat House, Okrika last Saturday.
Atamuno said the donation and training of the speed boat drivers became necessary in order to further ensure the safety of the people travelling from Port Harcourt to Okrika by sea, and promised to assist them in the training.
According to him, with the training, drivers would acquire more knowledge and skill on how to pilot their boats in line with global best practice, and enjoined both the speed boat owners, the drivers and the commuting public to be safety conscious and ensure they utilised the life jackets maximally in the interest of the masses.
In their separate speeches, a lecturer with the Rivers State University of Science and Technology, Nkpolu, Chief Isaac Zebobipi Ogulacha 11, who spoke on behalf of the Okrika Divisional Council of Chiefs (ODCC), Chief Francis Ebenezer Onye and a representative of the speed boat drivers, Tamunotonye Dikibo also stressed the importance of the life jackets to marine travellers said the gesture of Ajubo Atamuno had clearly shown his love for his people and safety of lives in the area, and enjoined him not to relent while praying God to protect and replenish his purse to achieve his heart’s desire.
Earlier, the Chairman of the Speed Boat Owners of Okrika, Chief Sunday Opeya also expressed gratitude for the gesture as the donation and training would go a long way in ensuring safety of lives and property of passengers, pointing out that the donor is a true son of the soil who had come to their aid when appeals made to various companies and organizations could not bear fruits.

Blue Economy: Minister Seeks Lifeline In Blue Bond Amid Budget Squeeze

Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy is seeking new funding to implement its ambitious 10-year policy, with officials acknowledging that public funding is insufficient for the scale of transformation envisioned.
Adegboyega Oyetola, said finance is the “lever that will attract long-term and progressive capital critical” and determine whether the ministry’s goals take off.
“Resources we currently receive from the national budget are grossly inadequate compared to the enormous responsibility before the ministry and sector,” he warned.
He described public funding not as charity but as “seed capital” that would unlock private investment adding that without it, Nigeria risks falling behind its neighbours while billions of naira continue to leak abroad through freight payments on foreign vessels.
He said “We have N24.6 trillion in pension assets, with 5 percent set aside for sustainability, including blue and green bonds,” he told stakeholders. “Each time green bonds have been issued, they have been oversubscribed. The money is there. The question is, how do you then get this money?”
The NGX reckons that once incorporated into the national budget, the Debt Management Office could issue the bonds, attracting both domestic pension funds and international investors.
Yet even as officials push for creative financing, Oloruntola stressed that the first step remains legislative.
“Even the most innovative financial tools and private investments require a solid public funding base to thrive.
It would be noted that with government funding inadequate, the ministry and capital market operators see bonds as alternative financing.
