Lawyer Urges Govt To End Judiciary Workers’ Strike
A legal practitioner,
Mr Ogar Egodo, has called on the Federal Government to end the ongoing nationwide strike embarked upon by judiciary workers.
Egodo made the appeal on Tuesday in Calabar in an interview with newsmen yesterday.
He said the timing of the strike was very wrong as this might affect the conduct of the February general elections.
“The strike will have adverse effect on virtually every aspect of the nation’s life including socio-economic activities and politics, especially the forthcoming general elections.
“We have many pending petitions arising from the party primaries and if all these cases are not disposed off there may be confusion.
“For example, I was supposed to be in the court today, but I cannot and my clients have refused to pay.
“I am stranded and I have children to pay their school fees in this January.
“So, I appeal to the authorities to meet the demands of the workers without delay to avoid confusion in the sector; because this is the last hope of the society, ‘’ he said.
Egodo added that financial autonomy of the Judiciary has become necessary in order to ensure smooth functioning of the courts.
“Government at all levels should stop playing politics with judiciary money, ‘’ Egodo said.
It would be recalled that workers in the judiciary commenced the strike on Monday, Jan. 5, to press for the autonomy of the Judiciary as enshrined in the constitution.
