Photochemist Links Ozone Layer Depletion To Fossil Fuel
A photochemist and
Dean, Post Graduate School, Rivers State University of Science and Technology (RSUST) Professor Godswill Fekarurhobo has linked the continous depletion of the ozone layer to continuous burning of fossil fuel.
Speaking in an interview with newsmen during an inaugural lecture organized by the university in Port Harcourt, recently Prof Fekarurhobo said that global warming in which aftermate is the depletion of the ozone layer and rise in sea level is being caused by fossil fuel.
The university don, who described fossel fuel as the single largest pollutant in the atmosphere, said that the sooner mankind realizes this, the better for the society.
He stressed the need for more encouragement on the use of photo active insecticide and herbicide while efforts should be made towards the reduction of green house gases on the environment.
Meanwhile, Professor Fekarurhobo has said that the exploitation and exploration of petroleum resources has endangered the society.
He said that multinational companies involved in the exploration of oil must adopt a strategic approach for quick and eventual cleanup of pollution sites.
The professor of photo chemistry said that, this strategy will reduce the effect of oil pollution on the environment.Professor Fekarurhobo whose lecture topic was titled “Let There Be Light: photochemistry in Action,” also advised against long exposure of vegetables to sunlight with the view to preserving its texture and qualities.
He also urged Nigerian Universities to adopt reserves that are peculiar to the country’s climate conditions as most research works being relied on by Nigerian universities especially those related to the environment are carried out in Europe and America.
The university don, who is the only professor of photochemistry in Nigeria urged for tuition free programme for Nigerian undergraduates under going course in photochemistry.
