FG Plans Rail Tracks For Eastern Ports
The Managing Director of
the Nigeria Port Authority (NPA), Habib Abdullahi, has disclosed plans by the Federal Government to construct rail tracks within ports in the Eastern region of the country.
Abdullahi, who made this known in his paper titled, “Towards Effective Utilization of Eastern Ports,” presented during the first national seminar on maritime and energy, organized by the Maritime, Energy Media Practitioners of Nigeria (MEMPON) at the Port Harcourt Port Training Centre on Thursday said the rails when completed would ease pressure on the roads.
Represented by the General Manager, Eastern zone, Mr Sunny Nwobi, he noted that it would also help improve haulage of goods within the region.
The Managing Director further hinted that materials had been imported into the country to commence the reactivation of the rails at the Port Harcourt Port, adding that even at Onne Port where there is no rail track, NPA is in the process of putting in place rails to ease pressure on the port link roads.
According to him, the authority has embarked on more projects in the Eastern ports in recent times cutting the dredging of the Calabar channel, which he said would soon commence, as well as the building of stacking areas in Onne Port and berth at Warri port.
The Chairman of the occasion and President of the Association of Nigeria Licensed Customs Agents(ANLCA), Olayiwole Shittu, decried the inconsistencies in port operational activities and policies, but lauded the Comptroller General of Customs, Alhaji Dikko Lade Abdullahi for putting in place welfare package for officers and men of the service.
Shittu, who was represented by the Chairman, Board of Trustee (BOT) of ANLCA, Alhaji Taiwo Mustapha commended the organizers of the seminar, as it could ultimately determine the growth of the national economy.
In a communiqué issued at the end of the seminar, MEMPON called on the Federal Government to immediately look into the deplorable condition of roads leading to all ports in the country, especially those in the Eastern zone; government should improve on policies affecting operations at the port and adhere to the existing ones; there should be healthy relationship between stakeholders and media practitioners in the industry, using MEMPON as a platform, among others.
Highlight of the event was the presentation of Award of Excellence to deserving maritime heavy weights and corporate organizations.
