Air Travellers Want Completion Of PH Airport
As Nigerians celebrated
the 54th Independence anniversary of the nation, some air travelers using the Port Harcourt International Airport, Omagwa, have called on the federal government to complete the ongoing remodelling work at the airport in line with its revolution in the sector.
Some of the respondents who spoke to The Tide, said the Port Harcourt International airport has remained in its present state of uncompletion for too long and urged the authorities to do something urgently to save the airport from dilapidation.
A Lagos bound passenger who simply gave his name as Mr. Nnanana, said the contract for the remodelling exercise at the airport was awarded along side others that have been completed.
He regretted a situation where passengers’ arrival hall for both local and international use mere canopies which deface the beauty of any airport.
Mr Nnanana noted that the picture that would be on the mind of a foreigner arriving the Port Harcourt International Airport for the first time would be demanding of a country that prides itself as the giant of Africa.
A Federal Lawmaker from Rivers State, Dr. Sekonte Davies, said the abandonment of work at the Port Harcourt airport is a slight on the people of the State, pointing out that political differences between the state government and the Presidency should have nothing to do with the work at the airport.
According to him, “if you are quarrelling with me should it affect my community or your community”. Rivers people should not suffer because politicians are having differences of opinion”.
He described the imposing abandoned arrival terminal building as an eyesore and a shame to the Niger Delta people produce the wealth of the nation.
Also, Mr. Ellah wondered why the Federal government under the leadership of the son of the Niger Delta could allow the project at the Port Harcourt airport to be abandoned and appealed to the authorities to complete the project because of the strategic nature of the airport and Port Harcourt to the nation’s economy.
On his part, a businessman and former chairman of Ogbia local government area of Bayelsa State, said the project has not been abandoned but the Federal government may be prioritizing the completion of the remodelling exercise according to the availability of funds and advised users of the airport to be patient.

Aviation Professionals Want Agencies Boards’ Inauguration
As a measure to curb corruption and restore accountability, the Association of Nigeria Aviation Professionals (ANAP), has called on the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, to push for the urgent formation and inauguration of governing boards for all other aviation agencies.
ANAP’s Secretary General, AbdulRasaq Saidu, made this call at the weekend when interacting with aviation correspondents, in reaction to recent inauguration of Board of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN).
Keyamo had recently inaugurated the FAAN board, more than six months after its members were appointed by President Bola Tinubu, where Dr. Umar Ganduje was named Board Chairman, with FAAN’s Managing Director, Olubunmi Kuku, as the Vice Chairman.
Other board members include representatives from the Ministries of Justice, Defence, Tourism, and Aviation, as well as professionals from the Nigerian College of Aviation Technology, and FAAN’s legal department.
The ANAP scribe there urged the aviation Minister not to stop at FAAN but to ensure that all aviation parastatals are given functional boards to restore order and credibility to the sector.
He, however, commended Keyamo for recently inaugurating the board of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria but stressed that more needed to be done.
Saidu also warned that the continued delay in constituting boards for other aviation agencies creates room for unchecked abuses, including illegal contracts, fraudulent employment practices, and mismanagement.
“The absence of governing boards violates the enabling Acts that established these agencies. Only properly constituted boards can enforce discipline, ensure due process in decision-making, and provide oversight to prevent corruption”, Saidu said.
He emphasised that the aviation unions, including ANAP, have consistently raised concerns about poor governance and lack of transparency within the aviation system.
He called on President Bola Tinubu to act swiftly by appointing board members for all relevant agencies, in the interest of fairness and aviation safety.
Saidu also tackled the former Minister of Aviation, Senator Hadi Sirika, for failing to inaugurate any boards during his eight-year tenure, despite appointments being made by former President Muhammadu Buhari.
“ANAP raised the alarm several times under Sirika’s leadership, but nothing changed. That lapse has continued under the current administration, and it must be addressed now”, Saidu stated.
