Fishermen, Natives Task Exxon Mobil On Oil Spill
Crude oil spill on the
Atlantic Coastline of Ibeno, Southern Akwa Ibom State allegedly occasioned by the operations of ExxonMobil Nigeria may force fishermen in the area to suspend operations even as natives appeal for immediate commencement of clear-up exercise.
The massive oil spill, affected Inua Eyet, Ikot and Esuk Ikim Ekeme, Atia as well as other coastal communities.
A statement from ExxonMobil attributed the spill to a fire which burnt off some crude stored at the tank farm within the oil terminal.
The community head of Iwuo Okpom, in Ibeno, Chief Okon Akpanubong, said the spill emanated Saturday from the tank farm operated by Mobil producing Nigeria, a subsidiary of ExxonMobil.
Akpanubong told newsmen that the company had inspected the site and promised to get back to the community, and appealed to the management of the oil company to clean up the spill.
The co-ordinator, Artisan Fishermen Association of Nigeria, Ibeno branch, Chief John Etim, regretted that the oil spill would cause untold hardship to the fishermen community and the entire people of Ibeno.
The association leader lamented that the fishes in the area had migrated deeper into the ocean and into the territorial waters of the neighbouring countries, and expressed worry that fishing by his members would be adversely affected in the area in the coming months.
“Every fish that live in the water will escape to deep sea where they will have a clean water to survive and this will be beyond the reach of artisan fishermen who operate near the coastline”, he said.
Etim said the development spells doom for his members who do not have high capacity outboard engines to embark on deep sea fishing adding that any fish caught at this time near the coastline must have been contaminated by crude oil.
He urged the company to pay compensation to Ibeno and other affected communities but noted that fishermen would be compelled to suspend fishing activities until the oil spill was cleaned-up.
The Manager, Public and Government Affairs, Qua Iboe Terminal, Ibeno, Mr Akaninyene Esiere confirmed the incident, and said that the company was studying the development and would issue official statement in due course.
