NSSF Begins Preliminaries For Shell/NNPC Cup Tourney
The President, Nigeria
School Sports Federation (NSSF), Malam Ibrahim Mohammed, has said the federation would soon begin the preliminaries for the 2015 Shell/NNPC Cup Football tournament.
Mohammed said this in an interview with newsmen in Lagos.
“We just had the final of the Nestle Milo and our annual Shell/NNPC Cup which has been running for almost 15 years now without any hitch will begin soon.
“This year started on a good note and we intend to sustain this and even improve on the scope of school sports, and we intend to keep it that way,’’ he said.
Mohammed said that the federation would not rest on its oars in a bid to attract more sponsors for its various sporting activities.
“There are various sports that these students are interested in, but we need sponsors to organise competitions for them.
“It is important that we encourage these children in the various sports of their choices.
“All sports should be encouraged; it will help to give them several alternatives to choose from,’’ the president said.
He also called on the coaches to be thorough in their approach and avoid recourse to fielding overage athletes in competitions at the expense of budding talents.
“We will succeed in grooming more talents in this country the moment we look inwards and look out for the best.
“There are so many talents in this country that have yet to be discovered, most of these children can be made great talents if given the opportunity to thrive.
“In recent times, most of the coaches are more interested in results by using established athletes to the detriment of the developmental aspects of the various sports,’’ Mohammed said.
He urged the National Sports Commission (NSC) to come to the aid of the federation by organising regular refresher courses for coaches under its purview for better performance.
“The NSC needs to show more interest in the activities of the NSSF because this is one federation that ensures the emergence of genuine age grade talents,’’ he said.
