Farmer Advises Youths On Catfish Breeding
A catfish breeder, Chief Simon Abili, has said that catfish has the capacity to grow to maturity within few months of introduction into a pond with the right and proper feeding.
Abili, a fish farmer who hails from Ake Oniso in the Ahoada West Local government area of Rivers State said the local government area has a comparative advantage for fish rearing.
According to him, most of the unemployed youth in the area were into catfish farming which, over the years, has enhanced the economic well-being of the people.
He said he has been in the business for the past 10 years. According to him, one of the major challenges he has had was the flooding of 2012 which ravaged his ponds.
Explaining further, he said the only thing that would make such business stand the test of time was adequate funding from the state local governments.
He adviced youths in the area to embrace fish farming even as he said most of those who began such businesses in the area have profited hugely.
He further explained that initially they faced the challenges of pilfering of ponds but the trend has reduced because most of the youths were now involved in fish farming and other profitable ventures.
He said the bulk of buyers were women with a small percentage of them also involved in fish breeding.
