Drainages:D/Line Residents, Traders Laud RSG
Even with the setting
in of the rains, the Rivers State government was still constructing drainages in D/line area of Port Harcourt.
A cross section of shop owners who spoke to our correspondent said even though the construction was distrupting their business, it was a welcome development .
According to Emeka who operates a barbing shop along Choba road, the construction some times keep customers away especially when equipment were on duty.
“Naturally when they dig the big deep gutters, customers would avoid the shop for fear of falling into them,” he said.
He said D/Line people were very happy because the area is a flood prone area.
For operators of taxi cabs who ply the Garrison, Agip, Mile 3 and Mile One routes the story was the same.
Accrding to Boniface Chikwe who operates the Agip route, the drainages will not only check flooding but it would also widen the road.
He said the construction was telling on the number of trips they make on a daily basis due to hold ups occasioned by the construction.
For food vendors who come out during the evenings to sell along the road, the constructions has temporarily put them out of business.
“But I am happy” said Mama Ngozi, who said the speed with which the work was going was encouraging.
The Tide investigation revealed that work on Mbonu, Omoku and other streets were already completed but serious work was ongoing on Choba Street.
Efforts to speak with Lubrik, (LCC) the firm handling the work was not successful before going to press but one of the workers who spoke to our correspondent and would not like to be named said the contractor was given a deadline to deliver as the state governor, according to him would not want D/Line residents to suffer any flooding again.
