Commissioner Hails RUFIN Implementation In Edo
The Edo State Commissioner for Agriculture and Natural Resources, Mr Abdul Oroh, has commended the Rural Financial Institution Building Programme (RUFIN) implementation, saying it has improved the lot of people at the grassroots.
Oroh gave the commendation last Wednesday during a courtesy call on him by RUFIN’s 8th Supervision Mission team led by Dr Ben Odoemena, the Country Programme Officer, International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD).
The commissioner acknowledged that the programme was making impact on the rural people as they were buying cars and motorcycles.
“I am satisfied with IFAD and the implementation of RUFIN in the state.
“Even though we have not paid our counterpart fund, IFAD has not abandoned us.
“Rural farmers are now buying motorcycles and cars, this shows that something is happening in the finance of the area,” he said.
However, he said that rural farmers in state needed more financial assistance for land clearing and acquisition of farm input.
The commissioner said the state government would soon pay its counterpart fund for the full implementation of the programme.
In his remark, Odoemana, the team leader, said the purpose of the visit was to assess the performance of RUFIN-mentored savings and loans groups in the state.
He commended the state’s leadership for its cooperation with the programme aimed at alleviating poverty in the state.
Odoemena noted that the programme would make maximum impact only when the state paid its counterpart fund.
He urged urged the commissioner to see his position as a vocation to help the rural poor.
The Tide source reports that RUFIN’s objective is to strengthen micro-finance institutions and establish linkages between them and formal financial institutions.
The programme is being implemented in 12 states across the six geopolitical zones (two from each zone) of the country.
The programme, which is being implemented over a seven-year period, receives financial assistance from the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), a UN agency and targets women, youths and those with physical disabilities.
The supervision mission team includes IFAD and RUFIN top officials.

Kenyan Runners Dominate Berlin Marathons
Kenya made it a clean sweep at the Berlin Marathon with Sabastian Sawe winning the men’s race and Rosemary Wanjiru triumphing in the women’s.
Sawe finished in two hours, two minutes and 16 seconds to make it three wins in his first three marathons.
The 30-year-old, who was victorious at this year’s London Marathon, set a sizzling pace as he left the field behind and ran much of the race surrounded only by his pacesetters.
Japan’s Akasaki Akira came second after a powerful latter half of the race, finishing almost four minutes behind Sawe, while Ethiopia’s Chimdessa Debele followed in third.
“I did my best and I am happy for this performance,” said Sawe.
“I am so happy for this year. I felt well but you cannot change the weather. Next year will be better.”
Sawe had Kelvin Kiptum’s 2023 world record of 2:00:35 in his sights when he reached halfway in 1:00:12, but faded towards the end.
In the women’s race, Wanjiru sped away from the lead pack after 25 kilometers before finishing in 2:21:05.
Ethiopia’s Dera Dida followed three seconds behind Wanjiru, with Azmera Gebru, also of Ethiopia, coming third in 2:21:29.
Wanjiru’s time was 12 minutes slower than compatriot Ruth Chepng’etich’s world record of 2:09:56, which she set in Chicago in 2024.
