‘FRSC Arrested 7,710 Offenders In January’
The Lagos State Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) said last Monday that no fewer than 7,710 traffic offenders were arrested last month in Lagos.
The Sector Commander of the FRSC, Mr Chidi Nkwonta, told newsmen that the offenders were involved in no fewer than 8,606 traffic offences.
Nkwonta said that a lack of caution signs, wind screens and non-use of seat belts topped the list of the offences.
“We were able to arrest no fewer than 8,000 offenders for 8,606 offences in January.
“Most road users always forget safety of their lives and those they are carrying.
“Yet, life has no duplicate at all; everyone should put safety first and obey traffic laws as a civic obligation.
“We cannot continue to be losing lives to road crashes; so, all motorists must avoid dangerous driving as well as drunk-driving.”
Nkwonta said that the command would intensify enforcement of traffic regulations to ensure sanity and reduce auto crash casualties in the state.
He said that top on his agenda when he assumed office was to raise the level of enforcement of regulations.
“FRSC is not an entertainment industry, it is an enlightenment and enforcement agency and will continue to enforce traffic regulations,” Nkwonta said.
The road safety official attributed the decrease in the number of casualties during the last ‘Ember months’ to the increase in the FRSC’s enlightenment and enforcement campaigns.
The command recorded 22 road crashes, which claimed 16 lives, during the 2013 yuletide season.
He said that 56 people were also injured during the period.
