FAAN Debunks Reports Of Pilferage At MMIA
The Managing Director of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Mr George Uriesi, has debunked reports of pilferage at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos.
Uriesi, who fielded questions at a forum on Sunday in Abuja, said that people misinterpreted cases of late arrival of luggage for theft of luggage.
“I will make bold to say that there is no pilferage in Murtala Muhammed Airport; somehow I don’t know why anytime I read a news item in the media about pilferage and I go back and I go and check, there is not even a report of pilferage.
What people miss is their bags not coming; maybe you come from Atlanta via Paris and your connecting time is very short; so your bags don’t move and you arrive here; people call that pilferage.
But the next day the airline brings back the bags; so that’s an airline thing.
Pilferage is not tolerated at all; the reason why there is no pilferage in Murtala Muhammed Airport is that if there is pilferage and we establish that there was pilferage, we simply call the entire crew and we say to them you have 30 minutes to bring out the person or all of you are gone.
And in 30 minutes they don’t bring out the person, thank very much; have a nice life all of you; when you do that twice you will be very surprised that nobody wants to lose their job.
“So, it is zero tolerance area, so if there is pilferage, all of you must tell me if you don’t tell me, after One O’clock, thank you very much; everybody bye -bye.
“So, everybody knows that when they are coming to work they are guarding against anybody pilfering any bag.’’
Reacting to the recent armed robbery incidents at the airport, Uriesi said that the security mechanism of the airport had been reviewed.
He said the airport authorities were collaborating with law enforcement agents to forestall any future occurrence.
“We have all agreed that it will never happen again and we have put a tight arrangement to that effect,’’ he said.
The FAAN boss commended security operatives for creating a room for such synergy that would guarantee adequate security at the airport.

Aviation Professionals Want Agencies Boards’ Inauguration
As a measure to curb corruption and restore accountability, the Association of Nigeria Aviation Professionals (ANAP), has called on the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, to push for the urgent formation and inauguration of governing boards for all other aviation agencies.
ANAP’s Secretary General, AbdulRasaq Saidu, made this call at the weekend when interacting with aviation correspondents, in reaction to recent inauguration of Board of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN).
Keyamo had recently inaugurated the FAAN board, more than six months after its members were appointed by President Bola Tinubu, where Dr. Umar Ganduje was named Board Chairman, with FAAN’s Managing Director, Olubunmi Kuku, as the Vice Chairman.
Other board members include representatives from the Ministries of Justice, Defence, Tourism, and Aviation, as well as professionals from the Nigerian College of Aviation Technology, and FAAN’s legal department.
The ANAP scribe there urged the aviation Minister not to stop at FAAN but to ensure that all aviation parastatals are given functional boards to restore order and credibility to the sector.
He, however, commended Keyamo for recently inaugurating the board of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria but stressed that more needed to be done.
Saidu also warned that the continued delay in constituting boards for other aviation agencies creates room for unchecked abuses, including illegal contracts, fraudulent employment practices, and mismanagement.
“The absence of governing boards violates the enabling Acts that established these agencies. Only properly constituted boards can enforce discipline, ensure due process in decision-making, and provide oversight to prevent corruption”, Saidu said.
He emphasised that the aviation unions, including ANAP, have consistently raised concerns about poor governance and lack of transparency within the aviation system.
He called on President Bola Tinubu to act swiftly by appointing board members for all relevant agencies, in the interest of fairness and aviation safety.
Saidu also tackled the former Minister of Aviation, Senator Hadi Sirika, for failing to inaugurate any boards during his eight-year tenure, despite appointments being made by former President Muhammadu Buhari.
“ANAP raised the alarm several times under Sirika’s leadership, but nothing changed. That lapse has continued under the current administration, and it must be addressed now”, Saidu stated.
