Drug Peddling In Nigeria
Not long age, operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency apprehended drug traffickers who concealed 3.200 kgs of high-grade cocaine with an estimated street value of thirty million naira inside candles at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Lagos. They were arrested during the inward screening of passengers of Emirate Flight from Brazil. The drug was industrially packed inside six big candles, four of which are black while the other two are green. On interrogation by Narcotic Officers, the suspects said, the candles were meant for spiritual use. Not satisfied with the answer the candles were broken and found to contain cocaine. The prime suspect Aina Fausat Olarewaju was immediately arrested following the discovery of the cocaine-laden candles in her luggage, containing female shoes, bags and clothes. The forty- five-year-old woman is believed to be working for an international drug cartel with stronghold in Brazil. She was taken on a follow-up operation within the country to arrest other people linked with the crime. According to the NDLEA Airport Commander, Alhaji Hamza Umar, drug cartels are daring and can go to any length in hiding drugs away from the reach of Drug Law Enforcement Officers.
It will be recalled that a fifty-year-old drug trafficker, Mr Offiah Gozie Vincent died of drug ingestion recently. The man who ingested one hundred and fifty wraps of methamphetamine was arrested at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Lagos, on February 13, 2011. The deceased tested positive to drug ingestion with the aid of scanning machines at the central screening section during the outward clearance of passengers on Emirate Flight to Korea. Investigation revealed that the man bought the drugs he ingested with the intention of selling them when he gets to Korea. As already noted, all drug peddlers in this country should be made to face the wrath of the law. Every individual in Nigeria should be made to be a good citizen. There should be no room for deviants in this country.
Meanwhile, the Bauchi State Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency has called on the House of Assembly to pass the bill that would prohibit the sale and consumption of illicit drugs in the state. The call came on the heel of the seizure of 407.5kgs of Indian hemp packed in twenty-four bags from a suspected drug dealer, Baron Haladu, on the outskirts of Bauchi, the State capital. Two other suspects, Maikano Yunusa and Shehu Musa were arrested at Dass Car Park in Bauchi for allegedly selling weeds said to be Indian hemp. The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency also said, it arrested eleven minors allegedly recruited as drug peddlers. It stressed that all those arrested would soon be arraigned at the Federal High Court, Bauchi. We appeal to all well-meaning people of this country to give useful information to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency on the hideouts of drug peddlers in Nigeria and elsewhere. We should not allow these delinquent beings to bring bad name to our country in the International Community. All their wings should be clipped. Criminals should be made to face justice at all times.
