Activist Canvasses Sovereign National Conference
A Sovereign National Conference has been advocated by a prominent Niger Delta activist, Ms. Annkio Briggs, who insisted that the convening of the conference remains inevitable for the country to move forward.
Briggs, who is the founder and Executive Director of Agape Birthrights, explained that such conference would pave the way for different ethnic nationalities to come together and discuss the way forward for Nigeria.
Speaking when members of the Goodluck Solidarity Parliament paid her a courtesy visit in Port Harcourt, Briggs recalled that Nigerians had never had the opportunity to sit together and discuss the development of the country.
The fiery activist who is also the matron of the visiting group, added that a Sovereign National Conference would avail Nigerians the opportunity to know the truth behind the 1999 Constitution, maintaining that the constitution was put together in a hurry by some greedy Nigerians.
“Nigeria as a country needs a Sovereign National Conference to enable us discuss the way forward for our great country. The fact still remains that we are different people and speak different languages and have different cultural backgrounds; divided right down the middle by religion, and this has been the foundation of our problem as a nation. At no time have we ever sat down as a nation to make decisions for ourselves based on our desires and aspirations in consideration with the desire of others and their aspirations too”. she said.
Explaining that an SNC will address some of the ills in the society by the past administrations and will help to restructure the country, she expressed the need for a constitution that would protect the rights of every citizen of the country.
She however, expressed satisfaction over the performance of President Goodluck Jonathan, even as she said that the South-East geopolitical zone should be allowed to occupy the position of the President in 2019 after Jonathan for equity and fairness. Earlier, the National Leader of the Goodluck Solidarity Parliament, Mr. Ikem Kalzeeni, expressed the need for Nigerians to continue to support President Jonathan’s transformation agenda.
Kalzeeni explained that apart from the effort towards improving power supply to the country, the recent commissioning of Enugu International Airport and the ongoing work on the East-West Road had shown that the President meant well for the country.

LP Crisis: Ex-NWC Member Dumps Dumps Abure Faction
Mr Ojukwu, who recently returned to the interim National Working Committee led by Senator Esther Nenadi Usman, noted that the party had 34 elected members in the House of Representatives, eight Senators, and 80 members at the state Houses of Assembly after the 2023 general elections.
“Now we lost all of them,” he said. “I don’t think we have as many as five members in the National Assembly.”
The former national officer of the LP talked to journalists in Abuja and said he chose to join the caretaker committee led by Senator Nenadi-Usman because they are now the officially recognized leaders of the Party.
“I chose to work with the caretaker committee to help save the Labour Party, for the benefit of the party. I also want to use this chance to ask my colleagues at the national, state, and local government levels to come together and help rebuild our party.
“Another election is around the corner. We lost everything we have. They have left to other political parties. So I’ll reach out to all my friends in the other group to get together and work on making this party stronger again.
“The caretaker committee has formed a reconciliation committee. Let’s come together and talk so that we can restore the first opposition political party in Nigeria.”
Mr Ojukwu, who was part of the Julius Abure’s group, said there are no more factions in the LP.
He added, “There is a court ruling, and since it is valid, the right people are in the correct positions.”
He urged Barr Abure and others to drop the legal cases they have filed because they are not helping the party.
“Litigations are killing political parties”, he said. “They’ve seen many political parties disappear because of legal battles, and the Labor Party is losing support every day, which makes me feel sad.”
Mr Ojukwu said he did not think joining the Senator Nenadi-Usman’s NWC was a betrayal of the Abure group, describing himself as “the oxygen” of that faction.
“I’m with this group because of the verdict. But I never betrayed anybody. Rather, I was betrayed,” he added.
