PH Residents Berate Mile One Market Traders
The urban renewal policy of the Rivers State government the able leadership of may not be accruing the desired dividends to the people due to the activities of some traders at the Mile One market.
A cross section of pedestrians who frequent the market have expressed displieasure over the blockage of the pedestman right of way by petty traders.
According to Lucky Iboroma a buyer from the market, using the pedestrian right of way has become a nightmare in recent times as traders boldly place their wares on the road thereby impeding free flow of Pedestrian traffic.
Iboroma who works in one of the fast food outlets along Ikwerre Road, said the traders were bold enough to warn people to be mindful of the were displayed on the right of way such words, “you go buy market”, are common among the traders he said.
A house wife Mercy Julius recalled an incident where she accidentally started on a tray of crayfish that was displayed on the sidework.
According to her, the owner held her for up to 20 minutes claiming damages.
She said it took the intervention of some passers by who made the girl understand that where she displayed her crayfish was illegal and if arrested she could be prosecuted before she could let her go.
For Mercy Obua, people took things for granted even when government provides facilities they were abused.
She called on the environmental sanitation authority to stop playing hide and seek game with the traders on the matter.
According to her, approached soon as sanitation officials the offending traders retreat, only to appear again as they leave the area.
She therefore called on the market authorities to call their traders to order as according to her, the sanitation people were doing their best in that direction.

FG, Ogun Distribute Inputs To 2,400 Farmers
Federal Government and the Ogun State Government, on Wednesday, distributed farm inputs to farmers as part of effort to address food security challenge.
The State Director, Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, Dr. Toyin Ayo-Ajayi, during the flag-off ceremony of Inputs Redemption Under The National Agricultural Growth Scheme-Agro Pocket (NAGS-AP), in Ogun State, disclosed that beneficiaries of the gesture were primarily rice, maize and cassava farmers across the State.
Ayo-Ajayi commended the Ogun State Government for partnering with the government at the centre for the effort in supporting farmers with inputs that would bring about yieldings for local consumption and likely exportation.
She noted that government is supporting rice, cassava and maize farmers with inputs worth N212,000; N189,000 and N186,000 respectively.
The Permanent Secretary in the State Ministry of Agriculture, Mrs Kehinde Jokotoye, who represented the Commissioner in the Ministry, Bolu Owotomo, stated that traditional farmers are critical in food production, hence the need to encourage and support them with inputs that would bring about desired results during harvesting.
Owotomo said: “Let us make good use of this opportunity, so that the success of this phase will make farmers benefit more from the state and federal governments of Nigeria.”
Earlier, State Coordinator, Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, Dr. Oluwatoyin Ayo-Ajayi, appreciated the present administration for partnering with the federal government for the initiative, adding that the programme is designed to support farmers at the grassroots level in cassava, rice and maize with inputs such as, seeds, pesticides, herbicides and fertilizers, to boost their production and enhance their livelihood.
