PH Airport Targets Second Best In Revenue Earning
The Regional General Manager of Port Harcourt International Airport (RGM), Mrs Ebele Okoye, says the airport under her leadership is determined to be the second best in revenue generation after the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos.
Mrs Okoye gave this indication recently while speaking at the commissioning of projects locally executed by the management of the Port Harcourt International Airport.
According to her, “we have at the back of our minds that to be profitable in this business of airport management, there must be the will and determination to do more and infact, it is our desire to be the second revenue generating airport”.
Mrs Okoye, who is the Regional General Manager South-South and South East, said the present revenue generation profile of the airport is far better than what it had ever been, emphasizing that her leadership refocused on monitoring revenue points to forestall careless loss of revenue for the organization.
“We have redoubled our efforts in recovering debts owed the authority, some as far back as 2008. It is cheery news to state that of the hitherto chronic debtors are now in credit with the Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) today at the Port Harcourt International Airport,” Mrs Okoye declared.
She disclosed that on assumption of duty, her first focus was to sensitise staff on the need to change their mindset and attitude to work as sine qua non to excellent performance and achievement.
The Regional Manager observed that to motivate the workforce, the management decided to intervene in their place of abode, that is, staff quarters with roads that had become a pitiable sight, received prompt attention.
Similarly, “the access road to the airport also got attended to by filling the pot-holes that had made the less than one kilometer road a death trap, while the offices received facelift to motivate the staff for optimal performance”, she said.
The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Mr George Uriesi, who commissioned the three projects embarked upon locally by the management of Port Harcourt International Airport, lauded the leadership for initiating the project which would uplift the status of the airport.
The projects include protocol car park, Guest House and renovation of the administrative block with a conference hall equipped with state-of-the-art facilities.

Aviation Professionals Want Agencies Boards’ Inauguration
As a measure to curb corruption and restore accountability, the Association of Nigeria Aviation Professionals (ANAP), has called on the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, to push for the urgent formation and inauguration of governing boards for all other aviation agencies.
ANAP’s Secretary General, AbdulRasaq Saidu, made this call at the weekend when interacting with aviation correspondents, in reaction to recent inauguration of Board of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN).
Keyamo had recently inaugurated the FAAN board, more than six months after its members were appointed by President Bola Tinubu, where Dr. Umar Ganduje was named Board Chairman, with FAAN’s Managing Director, Olubunmi Kuku, as the Vice Chairman.
Other board members include representatives from the Ministries of Justice, Defence, Tourism, and Aviation, as well as professionals from the Nigerian College of Aviation Technology, and FAAN’s legal department.
The ANAP scribe there urged the aviation Minister not to stop at FAAN but to ensure that all aviation parastatals are given functional boards to restore order and credibility to the sector.
He, however, commended Keyamo for recently inaugurating the board of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria but stressed that more needed to be done.
Saidu also warned that the continued delay in constituting boards for other aviation agencies creates room for unchecked abuses, including illegal contracts, fraudulent employment practices, and mismanagement.
“The absence of governing boards violates the enabling Acts that established these agencies. Only properly constituted boards can enforce discipline, ensure due process in decision-making, and provide oversight to prevent corruption”, Saidu said.
He emphasised that the aviation unions, including ANAP, have consistently raised concerns about poor governance and lack of transparency within the aviation system.
He called on President Bola Tinubu to act swiftly by appointing board members for all relevant agencies, in the interest of fairness and aviation safety.
Saidu also tackled the former Minister of Aviation, Senator Hadi Sirika, for failing to inaugurate any boards during his eight-year tenure, despite appointments being made by former President Muhammadu Buhari.
“ANAP raised the alarm several times under Sirika’s leadership, but nothing changed. That lapse has continued under the current administration, and it must be addressed now”, Saidu stated.
