Trolleys To Cost Abuja Airport Passengers N150
Air travellers will have to pay N150 for using a trolley at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, an official of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) said last Tuesday.
FAAN’s Regional General Manager, North Central, Mr Chris Bature, made the plan known when he received a donation of 114 new trolleys from Family Worship Centre, a church in Abuja.
The Resident Pastor of the church, Wale Afelumo, had told newsmen that the church made the donation for use at the airport as part of its 20th anniversary activities.
“We are here at the airport to donate 150 trolleys to FAAN as part of our yearly corporate social responsibility for community development,’’ Afelumo said.
He said 120 of the trolleys would be used at the international wing of the airport while 30 would be used at the domestic wing.
Bature expressed gratitude to the church for the donation and added that FAAN had acquired more than 300 trolleys to replace the old ones.
He said the change was necessary because of the large number of people using the airport.
Bature said FAAN would ensure that the trolleys from the church were used at no cost to passengers but that others would attract N150 to be used.
“There was no particular charge for the use of the old trolleys but a new company has come in and will charge N150 per trolley.
Bature said FAAN had met with the new concessionaires and agreed that the porters to be employed to operate the trolleys would be at no cost to the agency.
He said travellers would push the trolleys themselves in order to monitor their luggage but that porters would assist people with heavy luggage, the aged and the handicapped.
FAAN’s Head of Corporate Affairs, Mrs Henrietta Yakubu, said the donation came at a right time when the organisation had a plan to change its old trolleys.
“It is really going to go a long way in reducing the suffering of our passengers at the airport. We have had issues with trolleys and passengers had complained bitterly about it for a long time.
“Right here, there are not usually enough trolleys to be used but with this donation, I believe that the members of the flying community will be glad about it.
“We will ensure that this and the new trolleys that FAAN has bought will be used properly,’’ she said.
A passenger, Mrs Benedicta Okechukwu, commended the church for the effort.
“The new trolleys are good. The church has shown that it feels the pain passengers go through at the airports daily.
“The government should ensure that more trolleys are bought and the bad ones removed. “the new ones should also be well maintained so that people will be encouraged to donate more,’’ she said.

Aviation Professionals Want Agencies Boards’ Inauguration
As a measure to curb corruption and restore accountability, the Association of Nigeria Aviation Professionals (ANAP), has called on the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, to push for the urgent formation and inauguration of governing boards for all other aviation agencies.
ANAP’s Secretary General, AbdulRasaq Saidu, made this call at the weekend when interacting with aviation correspondents, in reaction to recent inauguration of Board of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN).
Keyamo had recently inaugurated the FAAN board, more than six months after its members were appointed by President Bola Tinubu, where Dr. Umar Ganduje was named Board Chairman, with FAAN’s Managing Director, Olubunmi Kuku, as the Vice Chairman.
Other board members include representatives from the Ministries of Justice, Defence, Tourism, and Aviation, as well as professionals from the Nigerian College of Aviation Technology, and FAAN’s legal department.
The ANAP scribe there urged the aviation Minister not to stop at FAAN but to ensure that all aviation parastatals are given functional boards to restore order and credibility to the sector.
He, however, commended Keyamo for recently inaugurating the board of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria but stressed that more needed to be done.
Saidu also warned that the continued delay in constituting boards for other aviation agencies creates room for unchecked abuses, including illegal contracts, fraudulent employment practices, and mismanagement.
“The absence of governing boards violates the enabling Acts that established these agencies. Only properly constituted boards can enforce discipline, ensure due process in decision-making, and provide oversight to prevent corruption”, Saidu said.
He emphasised that the aviation unions, including ANAP, have consistently raised concerns about poor governance and lack of transparency within the aviation system.
He called on President Bola Tinubu to act swiftly by appointing board members for all relevant agencies, in the interest of fairness and aviation safety.
Saidu also tackled the former Minister of Aviation, Senator Hadi Sirika, for failing to inaugurate any boards during his eight-year tenure, despite appointments being made by former President Muhammadu Buhari.
“ANAP raised the alarm several times under Sirika’s leadership, but nothing changed. That lapse has continued under the current administration, and it must be addressed now”, Saidu stated.
