Faulty Scanner Hinders Goods Clearance At Lagos Port
APM Terminals (APMT) in Apapa, a cargo concessionaire, said yesterday in Lagos that the delay in scanning containers for clearing at the port was being addressed.
The Chief Commercial Officer of APM Terminals, Mr Neil Fletcher, said that only one of the two scanning machines, acquired by a service provider, Cotecna, was currently working.
“We are experiencing a sharp increase in the number of containers targeted for scanning which is hindering our capacity to maintain booking of containers for clearance.
“Scanning of containers within 24 hours, as stipulated, cannot be achieved for now because of the faulty machine,’’ he said in a statement obtained by The Tide source.
Fletcher appealed to importers and agents to exercise patience pending the repairs of the faulty scanner.
According to him, the terminal has temporarily adopted physical examination of cargoes.
“We had talks with the Customs Area Controller, Umar Mohammed, who has agreed to the re-routing of Bills of Laden with multiple containers to the service provider for physical examination.
“Importers and agents are to apply to the controller to re-route containers that fall in this category.’’
Fletcher assured that under the new arrangement cargo clearance could still be speeded up.
He, however, promised that the terminal would refund charges on containers not scanned within 48 hours from the date of booking.
“APMT has no intention of taking advantage of the situation; we will refund any terminal charges on containers that are not scanned within 48 hours from the date of booking,’’ he said.
