Association Loses 490 Members To Oil Spill
The Artisan Fishermen of Nigeria (ARFAN), Niger Delta Region, on Tuesday said that 490 of its members had died from hardship due to high incidence of oil spill.
The association’s Secretary and Niger Delta Coordinator, Mr Inyang Ekong, who made this known in an interview in Eket, said, 150 members died in Ondo, 50 died in Delta, 90 in Rivers while 200 died in Akwa Ibom as a result of starvation and hunger caused by the Bonga oil spill in 2011.
“So many fishermen had died and some had to vacate the fishing settlement because they cannot do anything to earn their living,’’ he said.
According to him, the oil spill has caused members permanent poverty as their nets have been destroyed.
Ekong said that the oil spill had a direct impact on the livelihood of people in the riverine areas whose primary occupation was fishing.
The secretary said that Shell was not doing enough to clean up the spills and maintain infrastructure in the region.
Ekong said that the association had sent delegates to meet with the National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency (NOSDRA) on the Bonga oil spill issue, adding that it had not yielded any result.
He noted that Akwa Ibom was the worst hit by the oil spill in the region, saying that fishermen in state had to exceed the boundaries of other countries to fish in order to sustain their livelihood.
Ekong also appealed to the Federal Government, stakeholders, regulators and good spirited individuals to come to their aid, adding that fishermen had been deprived of their fishing occupation.
