Expert Harps On Bridging Digital Divide
The Managing Director, Beta Computers Ltd, Mr Will Anyaegbunam, on Thursday said that Nigeria would only realise the full potentials of ICT if the field was properly established.
Anyaegbunam told newsmen in Lagos that stakeholders, including governmental ministries, companies and database producers, needed to collaborate to make this possible.
“Bridging the digital divide is the first and most significant step that should be taken in efforts to have a properly established ICT framework and infrastructure in Nigeria,” he said.
Anyaegbunam said by banding together the specific growth initiatives, stakeholders could bring a wealth of knowledge to the people and enrich their lives.
“These partnerships are examples of how reaching across national and cultural boundaries to effect change is fundamental to successfully bridging the gaps that separate us from many countries of the world,” he said.
Anyaegbunam said Nigeria stood to experience many potential benefits by dramatically increasing access to pertinent information through electronic resources.
“The most notable benefits include a sharp increase in the overall quality of education in schools and universities through increased access to the latest research information.
“The residual benefits from having a better educated populace can often include the development of a more highly skilled workforce and an improved economy overall.
“Other benefits include improved international communication and relations and greater standing in the world of nations,” he said.
The managing director said the government should partner with information service providers and other dedicated organisations in assisting the nation in various ICT growth initiatives.
“They should also seek their assistance in facing the challenges limiting the uses of ICT in the country, like improving on the services of the library communities,” he said.
