Environment Experts Hold AGM, Dec
The Nigerian Environmental Society, (NES), has
announced its 22nd annual conference whose theme is: Green
Economy: The Impacts of Unsustainable
Environmental Practices” which will take place in Yenagoa, the Bayelsa
State capital from 6th to 8th December, 2012.
According
to a statement from the national organising committee of NES which was made
available to our correspondent, His Excellency, President Goodluck Jonathan is
expected to be the special guest of honour.
It
further said the guests of honour include the executive governor of Bayelsa State,
Hon Seriake Dickson and the Honourable Minister of Environment, Mrs. Hadiza
Mailafia while Professor Dagogo Fubara will chair the occasion with Prof. Ndowa
Lale of the Animal and Environmental Biology, University of Port Harcourt is
expected to be the keynote speaker.
In
a telephone chat with our correspondent, the chairman of the National
Organising Committee of the event, Dr. Confidence Wachukwu said the theme was
chosen with the aim of brainstorming on the way forward in bringing about what
was right for the environment to ensure its devastation was reduced.
“We
want to bring to limelight what people can do to bring about discouraging
economic and biodiversity loss to the environment,” he said.
He
expressed the view that this year’s AGM would be rewarding as technical papers
from notable NES members, Environmental Scientists, Engineers and Consultants
among others would be presenting papers.
According
to Dr. Wachukwu, the NES is a nonprofit making, non-governmental organisation,
NGO committed to the protection, development and sustenance of the environment
and to the promotion of environmental science and engineering in theory and
practice.
Launched
in 1985, NES according to him was declared by the federal government of Nigeria
as the “Premier Environmental Society and watch dog of the Nigerian
government,” he said.
In 1993, NES was accredited by the Economic and Social
Council of the United Nations as a National NGO.
