Octogenarian Donates Relief Materials To Bayelsa Flood Victims
An octogegenarian, Dame Mercy Alagoa says, she has donated materials worth N500,000 to flood victims in Bayelsa State. Alagoa, who spoke with newsmen in Port Harcourt Thursday, said the move became imperative following the sufferings of the victims in different camps in the state.
She noted that people in affected areas were going through hardship due to the devastating nature of the flood.
The Tide gathered that some deaths have been recorded in some parts of the country, due to snake or crocodile bites.
While calling on the public spirited individuals to brace up and tackle the situation, she called on Nigerians to come out and be their brother’s keeper.
According to her, this is the best period to show love for one’s nation, hinting that the Federal Government is already providing food for the victims in their camps.
Furthermore, she revealed that one Peace Ambassador Ombor and another private individual have promised her a 30 seater boat and helicopter to enable her convey the items to Bayelsa.
Such development she said, will fast track the business following the bad nature of the road due to the flood.
The philanthropist also hinted that one international NGO, World Outreach Medical Centre headed by Dorn Manadom, had volunteered to offer medical assistance with some medical teams from Shell.
She maintained that the victims need even treated mosquito nets and other items that will fight cold in their camps.
She said that she was in touch with the deputy Governor of Bayelsa State to ensure that the items were evenly distributed among the people regardless of their political affiliations.
Meanwhile, the philanthropist had lauded President Jonathan and State governors for their efforts, adding that her assistance will be continuous until the flood subsides.
At the time of filing this report about 31 states are believed to be submerged.
