C’River Tasks FG On Roads Repair
The Cross River State Government has called on the Federal
Government to urgently commence the rehabilitation of all federal roads in the
state to avoid further highway carnage.
The state Commissioner for Works, Mr Legor Idagbo stated
this recently in Calabar while briefing newsmen on the activities of his
ministry.
Idagbo said the call became necessary due to the worsening
condition of the roads, the Odukpani-Itu road, Atimbo-Akpabuyo road, and
Ugep-Obubra-Ikom-Ogoja road.
“We call on the Federal Government to live up to its
responsibility by urgently coming to rehabilitate and reconstruct those federal
roads.
“The roads are being used by all Nigerians, and not only the
people of Cross River,” he said
Idagbo said the large numbers of heavy duty trucks plying on
the roads was responsible for the deteriorating condition of the roads, adding
that the state government had already intervened in some critical areas of the
roads.
“We have had cause to intervene on some critical portions of
these roads. We have spent huge amount on this intervention process which the
federal government was yet to reimburse us.‘’
He urged the Federal Government to make good its promise to
refund the state the amount spent on the rehabilitation works, pointing out
that the construction of the Calabar Channel 2 drain was costing the government
N1.98 billion.
According to him, several urban roads have been completed
under the phase one urban renewal programme of the government which, he said,
included 12 km of roads in Ugep, adding “Others are the 30km of roads in Ikom,
24km of roads in Ogoja, and 15km of roads in Obudu.‘’
Idagbo said the ministry was embarking on several other road
projects across the state under the phase two urban renewable programme, adding
that several urban roads had been constructed and rehabilitated in the Calabar
metropolis under the phases one and two urban renewable programmes.
“The Margeret Ekpo International Airport by-pass is
currently under construction, while we are also undertaking the rehabilitation
and expansion of the IBB Way, that is regarded as the gateway to Calabar.
Idagbo noted the state government was currently constructing
a number of housing estates in Calabar and its environs, saying “Many of these
estates are at various stages of completion and all contracts being executed by
the ministry are in compliance with due process.”
