Youth Leader Wants Review Of Empowerment Policy
Chairman, National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) in Delta
State, Mr Hope George, has urged the Federal Government to review the national
policy on youth empowerment in order to attain desired results.
George, who made the call in Asaba suggested a holistic and
expansive review that address address
factors accounting for unemployment and youth restiveness.
He noted that the existing policy had not achieved much
result in reducing social problems associated with the youth, especially the
unemployment challenge.
George called for aggressive sensitisation programmes to
encourage youths to embrace skill acquisition and become self-employed.
According to him, it becomes increasingly obvious everyday
that paid employment is elusive, both in the public and private sectors, and
the option left for the youth is to pursue self-employment ventures.
The chairman underscored the need for synergy between the
government and the youth in the formulation and implementation of youth
programmes, to ensure that meaningful aspects of youth development were
captured.
He also called for adequate funding of youth programmes in
the country, especially in sports, stressing that youths constitute the bedrock
of sports in any nation.
