Bakassi Youths Take Protest To Assembly
Cross River State youths under the umbrella of the Youth
Council of Nigeria and Cross River State Political Network, have carried out a
peaceful demonstration to the state House of Assembly, protesting the ceding of
Bakassi to Cameroon.
Presenting their petition to the legislators, the Leader of
the team and Director General, Cross River State Political Network and member,
National Youth Council of Nigeria, State Chapter, Prince Michael Nku Abuo said
the youths were out to peacefully protest against the ceding of Bakassi to Cameroon.
Prince Abuo said it was their constitutional right to be
protected by the laws of the land and that the ceding of Bakassi has increased
the sufferings of the people.
He sued for the support of
members of the stateAssembly, and appealed that members should ensure
proper follow-up to ensure that the National Assembly does not sign the Green
Tree Agreement.
The team leader solicited for a peaceful resolution to the
matter to enhance the growth and development of the area and a return of
normalcy to socio- economic activities in the area.
Prince Abuo appealed that the people of Bakassi be given a
right to decide where to belong to and that come August 27th, 2012, the group
will be in the National Assembly to press further their demands.
In his comments while receiving the team in the Assembly
premises, the Deputy Speaker, and member representing Akamkpa I State
Constituency, Rt. Hon Itaya Asuquo Nyong commended the youths for their
peaceful conduct, and informed them that the Cross River State House of
Assembly has been at the fore front of the struggle.
Nyong said the Assembly has in previous sittings condemned
the ceding and that the state is not resting on its oars until the issue of
Bakassi is settled.
The deputy speaker, however, promised that the Assembly
would continue to support them and sustain the struggle in the interest of the
good people of the state.
