Council Signs MoU To Train Freight Forwarders
The Council for the Regulation of Freight Forwarding in Nigeria (CRFFN) is set to partner with training institutions to transform freight forwarders from predominantly uneducated class to an educated class.
The Council’s Registrar, Mr Mike Jukwe said this at the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding with some training institutions in the country in Abuja.
Jukwe, who lamented the way the practitioners had been discriminated against and called all sorts of names in the past, said that the initiative would give the profession a pride of place in the nation.
“This Memorandum of Understanding is aimed at transforming this profession from a predominantly uneducated class to a highly educated professional class and this is the reason for this partnership.
“Before now freight forwarding was an all comers affair. It was uncoordinated and unregulated. It was looked down on, while the practitioners were called touts and discriminated against.
“It is in a bid to maintain international industry best practices and to key into the transformation agenda that we are today kick-starting this initiative that will make freight forwarding in Nigeria the pride of the nation.’’
He, however, assured the institutions of the council’s determination to encourage them to establish centres of excellence that would enable them run programmes from certificates to doctorate degrees in various aspects of freight forwarding, logistics and transport.
“We expect you to carry out local and international researches and publish with a view to raising the freight forwarding profession to the highest heights.”
Responding, Dr Alex Okwuashi, the Rector of the Certified Institute of Shipping of Nigeria, urged the council to inform freight forwarders that the training was not optional but mandatory.
He said that the council should create the awareness to the forwarders to enable them know the importance of the training, stressing that without it; they would not make any head way in the profession.
He said that the institute had the facilities to accommodate more than 5,000 students.
Our correspondent reports that the accredited training institutions include the Nigeria Institute of Freight Forwarding, Benue State University, International Maritime Training Centre and Certified Institute of Shipping Transport.
Others are the Nigerian Institute of Transport Technology (NITT), Federal University of Technology, Yola, Federal University of Technology, Owerri, Maritime Academy, Oron, Redeemers University, Fortune Business School and Multimix Academy.
