Bayelas Saves N23bn In Three Months …Set To Recover Sold Public Buildings
Governor of Bayelsa State, Hon. Seriake Dickson says, has saved over N23 billion within the three months he had been in office. He has also indicated his intention to recover public buildings sold by Chief Timipre Sylva’s administration to his cronies.
Hon. Dickson stated this during the second edition of his monthly accountability programme held at the Government House Banquet Hall, last Wednesday.
According to Hon. Dickson, if he did not recover the houses, “one day, somebody will sell the Government House, and then the incoming governor would have to stay in a rented house waiting to build another Government House’’’.
Former Commissioners and House of Assembly members in Bayelsa State bought off their official residential quarters during Sylva’s administration on owner occupier basis with the promise of building new quarters.
The Assembly and Commissioners quarters located at Opolo and Ekeki axis of Yenagoa while the civil servants quarters were located in other parts of the state capital were also pencilled down for sales.
Some of those who bought assembly quarters are still serving members of the state legislature.
Bayelsa State Governor, Seriake Dickson at a press briefing with journalists in Yenagoa on the current finances of government, said the state executive council would however, deliberate on the sales of the quarters before taking a final decision on it.
He said: “I’m not going to endorse that policy of selling government buildings .No government building will be sold to anybody.I however , encourage Bayelsans to build houses of their own.If I should allow government houses to be sold, one day a Governor will say he has bought Government House.”
