PHALGA Set To Rebuild Marine Base Timber Market
The Port Harcourt City Local Government Council, says it is set to reconstruct the Marine Base Timber Market which was gutted by fire last year.
The Mayor of the City, Hon. Chimbiko Akarolo, said this during a courtesy call on him by the executive members of the Market Traders Association in his office.
Akarolo said that it was in fulfilment of his promise and thanked the traders for their patience, stressing that the council was now ready to build a modern timber market that would be equipped with fire fighting equipment and drainage system.
He also said that the council approved funds for the clearing of the entire market while fencing would be carried out immediately.
In his response, the chairman of the association, Hon Tamuno Kuro John, thanked Hon Akarolo for his plans to rebuild the market.
He also promised that the traders would be law-abiding, while paying their taxes promptly when the market is reconstructed.
Meanwhile, as part of his townhall promises, the Mayor of Port Harcourt City Local Government Area, Hon. Chimbiko Akarolo, has donated two 500hp out board engines to the Commander of Nigeria Naval Hydrographic School, Borikiri, shortly after a courtesy visit to his office, recently.
The PHALGA Chief Security Officer stated that the donation of the out board engines to the force would enhance security measures along coastal regions in Port Harcourt Local Government Area.
Akarolo hinted that the gesture was part of the council’s efforts in complementing state government’s determination to combat crime along the waterways in PHALGA.
In his reaction, while receiving the two out board engines, the Commander of the Nigerian Naval Hydrographic School, Borikiri, Nuhu Bala, said the equipment would not only assist them in combating crime but also in training their officers and men.
Bala thanked the Mayor of Port Harcourt for the partnership in curbing crime in the area.

Kenyan Runners Dominate Berlin Marathons
Kenya made it a clean sweep at the Berlin Marathon with Sabastian Sawe winning the men’s race and Rosemary Wanjiru triumphing in the women’s.
Sawe finished in two hours, two minutes and 16 seconds to make it three wins in his first three marathons.
The 30-year-old, who was victorious at this year’s London Marathon, set a sizzling pace as he left the field behind and ran much of the race surrounded only by his pacesetters.
Japan’s Akasaki Akira came second after a powerful latter half of the race, finishing almost four minutes behind Sawe, while Ethiopia’s Chimdessa Debele followed in third.
“I did my best and I am happy for this performance,” said Sawe.
“I am so happy for this year. I felt well but you cannot change the weather. Next year will be better.”
Sawe had Kelvin Kiptum’s 2023 world record of 2:00:35 in his sights when he reached halfway in 1:00:12, but faded towards the end.
In the women’s race, Wanjiru sped away from the lead pack after 25 kilometers before finishing in 2:21:05.
Ethiopia’s Dera Dida followed three seconds behind Wanjiru, with Azmera Gebru, also of Ethiopia, coming third in 2:21:29.
Wanjiru’s time was 12 minutes slower than compatriot Ruth Chepng’etich’s world record of 2:09:56, which she set in Chicago in 2024.
