NAFDAC And Sanity In Drug Trade (1)
For a genuine crusade to
achieve its targeted positive result, it must be adequately backed up by necessary machineries which could either take the form of distinct policy formulation or restrictive measures to strengthen, or better put, energize such innovations.
Similarly, in the task of a nation building which is often targeted towards the attainment of efficient and effective economic and socio-political liberation, indiscipline or alternatively, acts of sabotage cum unpatriotic practices must be maximally abhorred.
This means that the hydra headed monster which comprise heinous crimes like robbery, murder, corruption, kidnapping, smuggling etc must not be allowed to eat into the nation’s fabric.
This explains why government of various countries worldwide evolve legal disciplinary tactics in form of laws and courts to forestall the occurrence of these situations by apportioning commensurate punishment to crimes based on their weight or magnitude.
The desire of Nigeria health boosting organ otherwise known as National Agency For Food, Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) regarding the need for stiffer punishment to be meted out to drug adulterators and merchants of fake pharmaceutical products is indeed a right step towards the right direction.
If a sincere and most patriotic opinion must be expressed in this regard, nothing short of life imprisonment or outright death sentence as currently being clamoured for by this agency, is more suitable as punishment for perpetrators of this inhuman act.
Come to think of it ,why should pharmaceutical products emanating from intensive scientific research meant for the sole purpose of boosting human health status and consequently help elongate peoples life span be adulterated and rendered absolutely ineffective purely for self enrichment, not minding the consequences on human lives?
Indisputably, the need to nib this ugly and disgusting trend in the bud, led government’s of various nations to evolve scientific departments to bring the situation under severe control or eradication.
In Nigeria, NAFDAC is assigned this role among other numerous good health sustaining responsibilities. Its operations are backed by decree 15 of 1993 as ammended by decree 19 of 1999 with the mandate to control and regulate the manufacture, importation, exportation, distribution, advertisement, sale and use of food, drugs, cosmetics, chemicals, medical devices and packaged water.
In this regard, the Dr Paul Orhii led NAFDAC management team is not unaware of the agency’s onerous task. The agency is striving for a monumentally creditable performance leaving no stone unturned in its effort at ensuring that the agency does not only leave successfully to the aspirations of its founding fathers but also align with the dictates of global sophistication in the discharge of its assigned responsibilities.
Interestingly, news stories on incessant NAFDAC’s onslaught against numerous unpatriotic Nigerians and their foreign collaborators who are neck and leg deep in this pro-genocide transactions, adorn the pages of both domestic and international news media ie Newspapers, Radio and Television.
Notably, numerous acclaimed pharmarcies, drug stores, manufacturing outlets with questionable regulated products in the country including their importers have had a feel of the agency’s wrath ranging from outlets closure, product seizure, destruction as well as prosecution of offenders in courts.
Undoubtedly, there is need for more stringent and punitive legal disciplinary measures to be urgently evolved and adopted by the Federal Government through her judicial arm and backed by parliamentary accent so as to accord this patriotic agency adequate legal strength to effectively and efficiently combat the menace of fake drugs.
Currently, the nation’s legal system only approves light sentence cum punishment for offenders such as payment of ridiculous fines, few years jail term and confiscation of convicts’ properties. This pattern of admonition appears to have further motivated culprits to further engage in the trade rather than disengage as evident in the incessant voluminous interceptions, seizures, destruction and prosecution activities of the agency over the years.
It is in view of this that NAFDAC has commenced series of frantic moves geared towards ensuring that Government upgrade or amend its current anti adulterated regulated products laws to accommodate sentences such as life jail and assets confiscation or outright death sentence for anyone found guilty of this offence.
Sincerely speaking, this clause when inculcated in our law books, will go a long way in helping to deter prospective evil merchants from deliberately wasting human lives.
Undoubtedly, there is the need for a very strong and positive result oriented legal weight to be brought to beer in the admonition of self centered and desperate individuals whose nefarious acts have become highly embarrassing domestically and internationally.
Ideally, bringing to book maximally in a manner commensurate with the nature of atrocities perpetrated by these evil merchants, has become very imperative in view of modern global practices.
