Envoy Tasks Youths On Reading Culture
The Information Resource Officer of the U.S. Embassy in Nigeria, Mrs Suzanne Miller, has charged Akwa Ibom students to devote more time to reading.
The habit, she said, would give a big boost to President Goodluck Jonathan’s “Bring-Back-the-Book” Initiative, launched in 2010.
Miller spoke at Obot Akara, Akwa Ibom State on Saturday at a seminar with the theme – “Bring Back the Book to Akwa Ibom State”, which was co-sponsored by the American Embassy and the Obot Akara Local Government.
She emphasized that just holding the book would not impact knowledge to the holder but that they should rather create time to read with understanding, so as to enhance their knowledge.
According to her, “reading culture is a process of building up positive reading attitude among people and is one of the most effective tools for the acquisition of knowledge’’.
Miller, who was represented by Mrs Ann Mesembe, the Coordinator, American Corner, Cross River State, submitted that if one failed to read in life, he or she would definitely have moments of regrets later.
“We are pleased with the performance of the students in the competition and we will continue to partner with Akwa Ibom people to ensure the growth of education,” she said.
On his part, the Chairman of the occasion, Dr Victor Udoh, reiterated governments’ commitment to the restoration of reading culture among children.
He added that the efforts would be made to guide the youth in the broadening of their knowledge as well as intellectual endeavours.
Udoh, who is a Special Adviser on Power to the state governor, lauded Governor Godwill Akpabio for his love for Akwa Ibom children, as evidenced by the provision of free and compulsory education to all children in the state, whether they were indigenes or not.
He donated N10,000, which was increased to 50,000 by the Council Chairman, Mr Tiebiet Joshua, to any students in the area, who would read and understand 10 books within one month.
The seminar also featured reading, quiz competitions, drama, cultural display, paper presentations and presentation of the Children’s Parliament by students from Royal Pearls Academy, Uyo.
