‘Minimum Wage: No Work, No Pay In Plateau’
As its workers continue their strike over the non-payment of the N18,000 minimum wage, the Plateau Government has warned them that it may enforce the “no work, no pay” rule.
“Government is tired of the recalcitrant posture of the workers and may be forced to wield the big stick,” Mr Abraham Yiljap, the Commissioner for Information, declared on Tuesday in Jos.
“Just as government has complied with the N18,000 Minimum Wage Law, so shall it enforce the ‘no work, no pay’ labour law.”
Yiljab accused the workers of taking the government for a ride “in spite of the agreement to implement the minimum wage”.
He directed the workers to report to work with immediate effect, and vowed that defaulters would face the consequence.
The commissioner described the continued strike as “unfortunate”, saying that “while the government was consulting and awaiting proper clarification on modalities for implementation, the workers declared a strike on September 1, 2011; this is sad.”
He noted that the strike, involving all workers, including joint groups such as tertiary institutions, medical workers and judiciary staff, had taken its toll on the state.
Yiljab declared that registers would be opened for workers ready to return to work, stressing that those who stayed at home may remain there permanently.
The Tide’s source eports that the workers on Tuesday morning staged a protest at the secretariat of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) to register their disagreement with the government’s threat.
The workers, who took to the streets as early as 7.00am, were addressed by the union leaders who condemned the government’s stance.
Mr Jibrin Bancir, the NLC Chairman in Plateau, told the workers that they should not be intimidated.
“We cannot be caged or intimidated by government’s vow to enforce the ‘no work, no pay’ rule.
“We are ready to fight this cause to its logical conclusion; no one should report to work because we are still on strike.”
Bancir advised the government to do the right thing and stop intimidating the innocent workers who, he said, were fighting for their entitlements.
