SON To Enforce Certification Of Products
The Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) plans to meet with members of the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN) to review specifications on the Mandatory Assessment Programme (MANCAP) certification.
The organisation’s Zonal Coordinator, Alhaji Ahmad Pla’a, told newsmen in Kaduna, Wednesday, that it had constituted a committee comprising members of staff from the Northern region and representatives of manufacturers to carry out a sensitisation programme on the exercise.
He said the meeting was aimed at acquainting the manufacturers with specifications of quality products, certification of MANCAP and the Nigerian Industrial Standard (NIS) logo.
Pla’a explained that SON was determined to ensure high quality of manufactured products in the country, and would adopt stiff measures against companies that failed to meet the required standards.
“We are aware that there are some substandard products that pose serious health risks to Nigerians, and will leave no stone unturned to ensure we stop their production,’’ he said.
Pla’a said the organisation recently commended the Association of Tanker Manufacturers in the state for ensuring that its members complied with best practices. “The association strictly monitors members’ products to ensure there are no substandard tankers endangering lives on the highways,” he added.
The coordinator promised that SON would intensify its routing checks on manufacturers of building blocks to monitor the quality of their products.
He urged such manufacturers not to compromise standards, especially during the rainy season, when the country records high incidents of collapsed buildings.
