Former Governor of Osun State, Olagunsoye Oyinlola has urged the three tiers of government in the country to provide the necessary support needed for golf to thrive at the grassroots.
Oyinlola told reporters yesterday in Port Harcourt that the ongoing Sports Festival has shown that all the sport needed was support for it to grow.
Oyinlola the current President of Golf Federation Of Nigeria (GFN) also said that he was impressed by the level of performance that was put up by the golfers at the festival.
The president made the remark at the Port Harcourt Club golf course during the medals presentation ceremony of the golf competition.
The ex-governor also used the occasion to dispel the refrain that golf was strictly an elitist sport.
“You will agree with me that the people you saw on the medals dais were not elites but budding talents from the grassroots who love the game.
“What we now need is a concerted effort from the three tiers of government to provide the desired support by way of infrastructure for the game to thrive at the grassroots.
“I can assure you that with adequate support from government, the sport will grow to unimaginable heights,” Oyinlola said.
