Conducting A Successful Voters Registration
Nigeria is preparing for another general election. The first test of every credible or free and fair election starts with the process of voter registration. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has released the time table for the exercise and election time table for 2011. This exercise is already in progress. All eligible Nigerians fur the exercise are expected to participate in it. INEC and the Federal Government should not relent in their efforts at convincing and ensuring that all eligible Nigerians are registered.
At the initial stage, it was reported that six DDC machines were stolen at the Mohammed International Airport, Lagos. This is a bad omen for the election. Therefore every Nigerian must stand the chance of stopping any action that is capable of undermining the electoral process.
It is high time we stopped hoarding voter registration materials. This will deny the electorate’s franchise, and therefore must be done away with. Polling units should not be on paper in INEC – offices, rather there should be a physical representation of the polling units in all the wards across the nation. Hotel rooms should not be turned to polling units to deny Nigerians who are eager and anxiously waiting for the voter registration exercise. Indeed, politicians should stand the chance of counselling their loyalists not to hijack the materials on the way to any bush as that will spell doom for the forth coming election.
The INEC ad-hoc staff for the exercise should not see it as a means to make fast and fabulous amount of money. There should be penalties spelt out for any staff who is be found wanting perpetuating such disservice to our father land.
The materials for voter’s registration should be made available in the polling units across the nation. It is worthy of note that in the past, eligible Nigerians went to register but only to be told no materials. The mistake of the past should not repeat itself in this age of modern civilisation. Nigerians have heard of the short supply of DDC machines.
It should not be an excuse to disenfranchise Nigerians. This is not a time for lip service to the nation. It is a time of action.
All Nigerians who are up to eighteen years should see the exercise as a thing of joy and participate by registering their names. Nuclear and extended family members should also play the role of sensitising their members to register during the period of the exercise. The dream of credible elections starts with the manner and way the voter registration is done.
The political parties should also urge their teeming members to register. It is very unfortunate to see that some card carrying members of political parties do not have voter’s card. How can such persons vote for candidate of their choice or their parties during election? Sometimes such leads to electoral violence during elections, when they cannot vote.
Our electoral process should not be marred with irregularities. Nigeria’s electoral period should be seen as a time of joy and not killing and destruction of properties. The voter’s registration exercise is a litmus test for the forthcoming general election. Therefore, good measures must be taken to avoid a repeat of the past which is always condemnable. No Nigerian should sit on the fence to see where to apportion blame rather all hands must be on deck to make the exercise a success.
The religious organisations should also sensitise their members to register. Some youths may lack transport fare to travel to their home for this exercise; therefore it is the duty of some patriotic Nigerians to shoulder such responsibility. Nigeria as a nation may not have credible election if Nigerians do not desire it. Credible elections will start with credible voter registration exercise. This is the duty of all, irrespective of our religious affiliation.
Nigerians must eschew anything negative that will make caricature of our democracy in the comity of nations. Conducting a successful voter registration exercise will boost our hope for a successful and credible elections come 2011.
