Association Lauds Ohakim’s Free Transport Scheme
The Kwara Chapter of the Imo Welfare Association has commended Gov. Ikedi Ohakim for providing free transport for Imo indigenes returning home during the yuletide.
Addressing indigenes who enjoyed the scheme in Ilorin last Thursday, the President of the Association, Mr Auslem Okpala, said that the association was ‘very’ happy with the gesture.
He said that that many Imo people in Kwara would not have returned home for the Christmas.
“The impression has been very good. The governor is kind and humane enough to remember the people he governed. He is a governor who listens to his people.
“On behalf of the entire Imo indigenes residing in Kwara, I want to thank the governor and wish him well in the 2011 election,” the president said.
He prayed for the safe arrival of the beneficiaries at Owerri and their safe return to Ilorin after the celebrations.
Okpala also appealed to other governors of the south-east states to take a cue from Ohakim because of the rigours people went through in travelling to their areas during the Christmas.
Mr Christian Ngema, a beneficiary of the scheme, appreciated the work of the governor, adding that this year’s gesture had gone wider than in 2009.
“We appreciate the good work of His Excellency. We feel very happy and we pray that God sustains his life, his government and the people of Imo,” he said.
Ngema, who said that he was not a beneficiary in 2009, urged the governor to add a bus to the fleet in order to cater for the other indigenes who could not get a space.
It was gathered that the 60-seat bus with registration number Lagos XY 279 LSR, conveying the beneficiaries departed Ilorin for Owerri early last Thursday.

Kenyan Runners Dominate Berlin Marathons
Kenya made it a clean sweep at the Berlin Marathon with Sabastian Sawe winning the men’s race and Rosemary Wanjiru triumphing in the women’s.
Sawe finished in two hours, two minutes and 16 seconds to make it three wins in his first three marathons.
The 30-year-old, who was victorious at this year’s London Marathon, set a sizzling pace as he left the field behind and ran much of the race surrounded only by his pacesetters.
Japan’s Akasaki Akira came second after a powerful latter half of the race, finishing almost four minutes behind Sawe, while Ethiopia’s Chimdessa Debele followed in third.
“I did my best and I am happy for this performance,” said Sawe.
“I am so happy for this year. I felt well but you cannot change the weather. Next year will be better.”
Sawe had Kelvin Kiptum’s 2023 world record of 2:00:35 in his sights when he reached halfway in 1:00:12, but faded towards the end.
In the women’s race, Wanjiru sped away from the lead pack after 25 kilometers before finishing in 2:21:05.
Ethiopia’s Dera Dida followed three seconds behind Wanjiru, with Azmera Gebru, also of Ethiopia, coming third in 2:21:29.
Wanjiru’s time was 12 minutes slower than compatriot Ruth Chepng’etich’s world record of 2:09:56, which she set in Chicago in 2024.
