Delta To Adopt N’Delta Regional Master Plan
The Delta State Government says it will key into the Niger Delta Regional Development Master Plan in addressing environmental degradation in the state.
The Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Dr Beatrice Omeni, disclosed this in Asaba on Monday when she received participants of Course 19 of the National Defence College, Abuja.
Omeni told the visitors, who were in the state on a geo-strategic study tour, that government would put in place programmes that would guarantee a healthy environment.
She stressed that to achieve that, government would also key into other regional and global programmes and charters, so that it could reverse the loss of environmental resources by 2015.
According to her, environmental degradation accounts for the loss of aquatic life, health hazards, erosion and soil infertility.
Omeni said the state government was taking adequate steps to protect the environment.
Earlier, the leader of the visiting group, Cmdr. Gabriel Edmund-Okoi, said the group was in the state to under study the effect of environmental degradation.
He said the group would consider how the state and local governments were tackling degradation so as to make recommendations on how to find sustainable solutions to the problem.
The theme of the study was “ Environmental Protection and Socio-Economic Development in the State: Challenges and Prospects”.
